SAMSON REVIEWED
“Samson” shouldn’t be this good. Rutger Hauer and Lindsay Wagner offer up fun turns. But, the star of the movie is Billy Zane as King Balek. Let’s walk it back for the people not indoctrinated in Christian lore. Samson was a supernaturally strong dude who would eventually become King. He is famous for slaughtering this tribe of savages named The Philistines. It eventually turns into an emasculation metaphor and a slight against powerful woman. But, let’s stick with what is onscreen.
Given that it’s Pure Flix and PG-13, they dial back the violence found in the Bible. What they delve into is making it that God intervened with Samson and helped to make the killer fight scenes play well on a shoestring budget. The end result is the older actors ham it up enough to cover the cheap nature of the film. While the film failed to make a dent against the juggernaut that was Black Panther, I hope that it gets a new audience on home video.
If you’re wondering why this one took so long, that’s because the other Pure Flix movie took a lot out of me. Oh yeah, it’s coming before Avengers hits.
