DARKEST HOUR REVIEWED
“Darkest Hour” annoys younger viewers, Brits, DDL fans and generally anyone that isn’t between the ages of 60-80. Recent looks at the film have taken issue with the fact that troubled actor Gary Oldman plays troubled leader Winston Churchill. But, what’s missing from past performances of Churchill that Oldman managed to use to strike a nerve? We all know that he cheated on his wife, had questionable opinion of non-whites and generally dragged his ass across the first half of the 20th Century. But, we’re missing what’s important. At least, he wasn’t a wuss like Neville Chamberlain.
While listening to Op-Eds about this film, Churchill and everything in-between, I reflected to another movie. That movie was “Team America: World Police” because British movies don’t inspire me. In Team America, a local drunkard teaches our hero about the world. Sometimes, there are going to be dicks, pussies and assholes. Assholes are always bad, so you’ve got to decide whether you’re going to be a dick or a pussy. Not everyone is going to like you, but it’s better be taking action rather than getting it in the end.
This film treats Churchill with the lightest touch this side of Thatcher in “The Iron Lady”. However, it tries to ground his dickish behavior with a degree of humanity. Does it excuse the things he did in office and prior to taking office? No. But, Europe needed a dick to shove into Hitler’s ass to slow down the Third Reich. History doesn’t ask you to understand leaders, but to judge their decisions. If you’re a Brit that isn’t currently speaking German, then you should watch this movie and learn to passively thank Churchill. Now, I’ve got to go collect my money for winning a bet.
