RENDEL: DARK VENGEANCE REVIEWED
“Rendel: Dark Vengeance” is pretty generic. While writer-director Jesse Haaja finds a new way to bring superheroics to Finland, nothing really comes of it. It feels like a mix of Batman, The Crow and the modern Marvel Cinematic humor. Then, it starts slipping back into the dark nature of the Frank Miller movies. All the while, it keeps fighting against itself to try and be new. But, it never happens.
For a film that insist on itself so much, I wasn’t expecting an origin film. Hell, wrap it up in the first 15 minutes. So much time is wasted just trying to sell a carbon copy superhero to the International market. We get it, now let him do his thing. Unfortunately, that won’t happen until a conceptual sequel comes together.
