D.O.A: A RIGHT OF PASSAGE REVIEWED
“D.O.A.: A Right of Passage” was a documentary about the Sex Pistol and the rise of British punk. While most of the documentary followed the Sex Pistols on their last American tour, it did something more. The film arrived in arthouse theaters about two years after Sid & Nancy died. In the film, we see the final footage of the punk couple taken shortly before Nancy was killed. Sid Vicious could barely stay conscious and Nancy was still making excuses for him.
D.O.A.: A Right of Passage feels way more damning in its portrayal of Punk than Spheeris’ later work on “The Decline of Western Civilization”. In the 1970s, the question for fans was whether older music types could even understand Punk. Well, this documentary makes it clear over an ever-increasing passage of time. It’s quite possible that Punk fans didn’t even understand the gutter scum they were trying to make into heroes.
Take the time to check out the full-length documentary in the special features. It offers a follow-up to the main film, plus it softens some of the harder edges. Good stuff all around.
