DREAMGIRLS: DIRECTOR’S EXTENDED EDITION

DREAMGIRLS: DIRECTOR’S EXTENDED EDITION REVIEWED

“Dreamgirls” finally gets it’s Director’s Extended Edition on Blu. There’s a catch, though. You lose most of the special features on the first Blu-ray release, so that they can include a DVD copy. It doesn’t make a ton of sense, but the Digibook presentation is so pretty. You get a booklet that walks you through the song lyrics, plus some new special features. But, what about the film?

If you’re under the age of 11 and no one has introduced Dreamgirls, I’ll explain it to you. It’s The Supremes with more melodrama and plot drags between songs. Eddie Murphy squandered the good faith he mustered on this film by doing Norbit. But, it’s not like it mattered. America goes to see fat people movies and not Musicals.

Still, I have the feeling that this adaptation would’ve had more power closer to its original Broadway run. Yeah, I get the economics of not doing that, but that’s what happens. That being said, Jennifer Hudson’s performance is still amazing 11 years later. Good stuff all around.

  • Photobook with select song lyrics
  • Extended and Alternate Scenes
  • Jennifer Hudson’s never-before-seen audition and screen test footage

A/V STATS

  • DTS: X
