SOUTH PARK: THE COMPLETE TWENTIETH SEASON

SOUTH PARK: THE COMPLETE TWENTIETH SEASON REVIEWED

“South Park: The Complete Twentieth Season” might be one of my favorite seasons of South Park. The show has had many highlights and many preachy missteps. This past season has walked that high-wire and came out better for the effort. Yeah, I say this after the Internet began to make me sick of ‘member Berries. But, what of South Park in 2016? What made the only thing worthwhile on Comedy Central into such a monumental achievement this year?

Basically, they attacked a country and people that are sharply in decline, but steeped heavily in denial. Hell, this might be the first show that accurately portrayed what makes online trolling work. Nobody does anything out of obligation or personal drive. Things happen out of fear or desire to gain something back. The ‘member berries were a great way to frame a satirical look at modern culture, but Gerald Broflovski was the vehicle for this year’s genius.

Gerald trolls because it’s funny to make self-important asses go crazy. But, that’s where all trolling starts. For once you zing the worst of society, it becomes way too easy to go after the rest. Most trolls only become real trolls when they have the apparatus and support to go insane on people. Much like President Garrison and his botched face Vice President and their rise to power. A joke can go too far and that’s the backbone of this season. Could it have ended better? Sure.

The magic of that finale is that in our stupidity to stay in the past, we got lumps of purple garbage into the White House. Watching a series follow American decline from Volleyball protests to losing the White House is quite the twisted mirror. But, it’s funny right? It’s still funny.
