UNHOLY, THE: VESTRON VIDEO COLLECTOR’S SERIES

THE UNHOLY REVIEWED

“The Unholy” feels like an Americanized take on an Italian horror film. Catholicism and demonic corruption are toyed with, as we follow Ben Cross attempting to save the people of his parish. All the while, the heavy religious horror of “The Exorcist” weighs down everything. After two Priests have been murdered, it’s up to Ben Cross to make things right. But, can he save the Parish if the Unholy want to pick him off?

While it’s fun to see Trevor Howard in his final role, there isn’t a ton of amazing moments in the material. If you want to watch a British actor play a Southern Priest that’s fighting the charms of a lady demon…this is for you. Modern horror fans might have difficult hanging with the film for nearly two hours. After you watch the film, make sure that you check out the special features. The original ending is presented on the disc, so that will help make sense of what you see on film.

Thematically, there’s a ton going on in this Italian horror homage. However, there’s a reason why Fulci and others gave up on this kind of film. It’s so difficult to stick a satisfying ending for this kind of tale. Do you really want the boy to get the demon girl? Of course not.
