SNOOPY, COME HOME

SNOOPY, COME HOME REVIEWED

“Snoopy, Come Home” is such a hard film for people under the age of 40 to understand. It’s an animated movie that runs under 80 minutes and feels like a TV special. Sure, the Sherman Brothers writing songs for the movie gets a Disney feel. It’s just that there’s such a crushing sense of familiarity to the movie that it’s no wonder it bombed. The Peanuts gang would return to TV in 1973/74 with even more Holiday specials.

No matter how great the characters are or how fun it is to hear “NO DOGS ALLOWED”, there’s not a ton going on in the film. Watching it with my daughter for the first time puts this childhood favorite in perspective. She could hang for the first hour, but it takes so long to resolve the issues with Snoopy’s first owner. Hell, the little blonde girl doesn’t even come into play until nearly the 30 minute marker. What’s up with that?

One has to admire the creativity in the animation flow and credit design. However, it feels more like an extended short film than a worthy feature project. All of the Peanuts films have that tinge, but for some reason that feel dominates this entire narrative. What are you going to do?
