THE DEADLY TRACKERS REVIEWED
“The Deadly Trackers” is such a bizarre Exploitation Western. Originally setup as a Western for Samuel Fuller to helm, the movie was meant to make the most of its miscast actors. While the Irish Richard Harris had made a few Westerns to this point, none had him play so bloodthirsty. Rod Taylor makes his way out of Men on a Mission movies and Hitchcock flicks into a role of a Mexican bandit. The dashing Taylor couldn’t play Mexican on Mars, so he doesn’t quite work here.
For a film that runs slightly over 90 minutes, the story doesn’t try to make any big gains. Basically, new sheriff loses his family to gun-toting bandits. So, Sheriff grabs some guns and kills vaguely ethnic bandits. I’m not sure how much of the film existed under Fuller’s guise, but the bizarre still shots in the opening credits make me scratch my head. Some of the shots don’t match up to the final print. I know that WB probably won’t revisit this title anytime soon, but there’s got to be some choice deleted scenes hidden in a barn somewhere.
