“Marianne” is a rather lengthy musical for the early Talkies era. Coming in just under 2 hours, we get a full album’s worth of music as Marion Davies thrills viewers with a light-hearted look at World War I. It’s nothing but a bunch of soldiers flirting with a local chick. The titular character takes care of war orphans and does her best to keep spirits up. But, what happens when she loses a roast pig meant for the local General?
These are the kinds of problems that people had in Depression era cinema. I guess that they needed something light hearted like war time comedies, while stockbrokers jumped out of windows. It’s a cute little flick that serves as a time capsule. But, it’s a trifle. There’s nothing here that anyone will ever remember even from the era. That being said, it’s a solid look at what made Marion Davies into a second tier star.
