STUFF, THE

THE STUFF REVIEWED

“The Stuff” has aged better than “The Blob”. Capturing an element of industrial politics, B-movie horror and commercial commentary, we get one of the best films about the 1980s. The sheer obsession that everyone has with jamming a foreign food in their mouth is far more interesting than the killer gore effects. It was cool to see Patrick Dempsey and Mira Sorvino show up in the background of the film, but I kept finding myself returning to that opening scene. A guy finds white crap on the ground in a workyard and eats it.

Forget the stuff about the corporate saboteurs or the kid going apeshit in the grocery store. The central figure of the film was discovered by a fattie eating junk off the ground. That is so insanely disgusting, yet so truly American that Larry Cohen should be applauded. The film is a quick romp, that is easy to watch for all audiences. If you enjoy it, I recommend delving back deeper into the Larry Cohen filmography. You won’t be disappointed. Well, “The Ambulance” wasn’t that great.
