PAULETTE REVIEWED
“Paulette” scratches that international itch to watch old women grow marijuana. The lady is brash and opinionated, but she works well with the others in her housing project. I’m still not sure how much material is left in culture clash over marijuana. Especially, as most civilized parts of the world move to legalize it. Could the film have felt far more relevant say 20 to 30 years ago? Yeah, but that would’ve meant making the old lady a lead in something.
Cohen should be commended for bringing this delightful THC romp to American shores. That being said, it’s a crowd treat and not something indicative of the current strength of French cinema. Sometimes, they don’t all have to be high art. It’s just that I want to see something that I wouldn’t get in America. Most of the film might as well been called “Old Weeds”. Still, if that’s what you dig…check it out.
