EXPERIMENTER

Authority and conformity make for excellent experiments.

Stanley Milgram is no B.F. Skinner.

“Experimenter” is another great film about social experiments. Taking a serious look at Stanley Milgram’s Yale studies about authority in the early 1960s has produced something stunning. But, it’s still just a biopic. If you can enjoy the broad strokes and people playing to note, then this is for you. I know that sounds bad, but it’s not.

My favorite part of the film is the sequence when Milgram experiences a TV movie shot about his life in the 1970s. Dennis Haysbert playing Ossie Davis and Kellen Lutz playing William Shatner is a nice weird mini-movie within a movie. Winona Ryder is stunning and contributes stellar supporting work. If you want to watch that TV movie, it’s called “The Tenth Level” and it’s obtainable. Just don’t expect a documentary.

The Blu-Ray comes with featurettes as the special features. The A/V Quality is quite stunning. The 1080p transfer pops for a drama, while the DTS-HD 5.1 master audio track is supportive. That’s very surprising for a quiet drama. Ultimately, it’s worth a purchase.
