TENDERNESS OF THE WOLVES

You'll believe that a German could murder children.

Kurt Raab deserves more praise from the horror community.

“Tenderness of the Wolves” is a true crime story about the Butcher of Hanover. Between the World Wars, Fritz Haarman picked up a reputation as the Butcher. He was a gay man with a twisted childhood that suddenly decided he was a cannibalistic vampire. Haarman would lure runaways to secluded location and bleed them to death. Afterwards, he’d process their bodies and feed the meat to his friends.

Many people remember the case for being the inspiration for Lang’s “M”. But, that’s trite. What you should realize while watching this highly stylized depiction is that it all happened. Post WWI Germany was a very poor place and Haarman took advantage of it by working as a police informant. The Hanover PD literally gave Haarman over 85% of his victims. Doesn’t that just blow your mind?

The Blu-Ray comes with a commentary, new interviews, an appreciation, stills gallery, trailers and all sorts of goodness. The 1080p transfer is stunning and comes from a new transfer via the Rainer Weiner Fassbinder Foundation. The LPCM 1.0 mono track is fresh and respects the original audio choices. If you’ve been looking for the original Anchor Bay DVD, let it go. Pick up this release!
