Del Toro makes a Hammer movie without considering modern sensibilities.
Crimson Peak tried to bring Gothic Horror back into the American cinema. Naturally, audiences rejected it like it was about a series of giant mecha units fighting Kaiju. While I appreciate the stylistic choices and the performances of Hiddleston and Chastain…the lead actress is just awful. Mia Wasshername has yet to impress me as Alice, random teen daughter of Lesbian couple or any number of roles in which she had lines as set dressing. Couple that with Guillermo Del Toro’s throbbing to recreate “The Innocents” and you have an interesting failure. But, it’s a failure all the same. Does a sweet death for Loki and atmosphere overpower the lack of a story? Sadly…no.
