“Blind Woman’s Curse” is a film about a young girl losing her eyesight in a clan battle, then being cursed by a black cat. She ages and returns with a vengeance. Meiko Kaji continues her domination of genre flicks in the early 1970s. What makes this flick so special is the lack of major focus on Kaji as an avenging figure. In fact, she’s the villain.
Grotesque erotica has always had a home in Japanese cinema. Whether it’s ornate tattoos, deep violence or so much flesh…Nikkatsu created a tale that reaches past your usual swordplay. Borrowing liberally from Poe, Meiko Kaji is tortured by the vision of that black cat and the woman she blinded. By the time vengeance comes to her door, she’s almost begging to be released.
The Blu-Ray comes with a commentary track, original trailer, trailers for the Stray Cat films and a collectible booklet as the special features. The A/V Quality is pretty sharp for a film of its age. The 1080p transfer is sharp. Plus, the LPCM mono track continues its shining track record. In the end, I’d recommend a purchase.
