STRANGERLAND

“Strangerland” is a return to basics for Nicole Kidman. But, there’s a reason she stopped making “BMX Bandits” and started making “The Hours”. There is nothing about this film that is unique, as most of the film is spent in quiet meditative moments while Kidman’s teenage kids remain missing. Joseph Fiennes also shows up to remind you that he still gets work. That’s not to fault the guy, it’s just that he doesn’t get a ton to do.

Hugo Weaving is the real star of the show, as he treats the case seriously and studies every aspect of the case. What happened in Kidman and Fiennes’ past and why did they move to the desert to hide out? The talent behind the camera appears to be making their feature film debuts here. It’s good work, as I can see where they might approve in the future. But, I wouldn’t call it an essential film.

The Blu-Ray comes with featurettes as the special features. The A/V Quality is strong for an indie drama. The 1080p transfer is pretty standard. Plus, the Dolby TrueHD 5.1 track supports the dialogue. In the end, I’d recommend a purchase.
