SPONGEBOB MOVIE, THE: SPONGE OUT OF WATER 3D

“Sponge Out of Water” is the second Spongebob Squarepants movie and I love that they play up the oddity of the show. Antonio Banderas plays a pirate who starts warping reality after he steals the secret of the Krabby Patty. Patrick Stewart is a sentient space dolphin and the gang becomes superheroes. I laughed, the kid laughed and we both enjoyed a movie outside of “Mars Attacks”. Paramount and Nickelodeon know how to bring families together.

What hurts the film for me is how much of the plot feels like past episode retreads. That’s not a terrible thing, but I shouldn’t be feeling like the Pirate sequence is aping something else. The same goes for the Plankton swiping the Krabby Patty formula. The set pieces are neat, but why did all of the cool songs get left for the end credits? So much of what was going down just left me scratching my head.

The Blu-Ray comes with 2D and 3D transfers of the film. The field of depth and the 3D effects are amazing on that transfer. But, both transfers sport the clarity of something that you’d expect out of Pixar. If that wasn’t enough, you get 3 hours of featurettes, music videos and other bonus content. Hell, you even get a 3D deleted scene. That’s so cool! There’s also a DVD copy for those that haven’t caught up to the modern generation. In the end, it’s worth a purchase.
