“The Crimson Field” is about a military field hospital during World War I. Oona Chaplin, Hermione Norris and Kevin Doyle headline this tale of daring army medics. Basically, it’s like MASH by way of Downton Abbey. Proper manners and aesthetic are preserved for her Majesty’s dignity. Still, brutal warfare wages all around the operating center.
I wish the show could’ve been far more gruesome. Hell, “Boardwalk Empire” had a supporting character that accurately showed how WWI veterans were reconstructed after battle. I don’t get the sense of crude, but more of the sense of dwindling mortality. That doesn’t appeal to the gore hound in me.
The Blu-Ray comes with no special features. The A/V Quality is astonishing for a PBS series. The 1080i transfer is a little flat, but works for what it is. The Dolby 2.0 track is lossy, but that’s typical for these releases. In the end, I’d recommend a purchase.
