A kidnapped young woman is forced on a road trip full of murder and mayhem that takes place entirely in her captor’s getaway van.
WHAT WE THOUGHT
“VANish” is the kind of film that a teenager would make if they were obsessed with crime flicks and you gave them 500,000 and access to B and C list of celebs. Trejo and others don’t show up until the end of the movie, but Tony Todd gets a chance to shine outside of the horror realm. I just wish that the film was worth of the once and future Candyman. But, you take the good and the bad and you build a career. The lead actress did her best, but the plot wasn’t that strong for her to make a dent.
I don’t know if there is a market out there that demands these films, as I feel I see them with the regularity that I see Asian historical fiction going direct-to-video. That being said, not everyone is going to headline a top grossing film. There just has to be some middle ground to create something spectacular and I’d love to see it when it arrives. The only thing that really works in the movie’s favor is that the short running time keeps the tempo flying fast enough for all of the Fletchers out there. Outside of that, you’ve got a movie that provides for a great wasted afternoon and nothing more.
The Blu-Ray comes with commentary, blooper reel, alternate endings and a trailer as the special features. The A/V Quality is solid for an indie action flick in HD. The transfer is a strong 1080p presentation. But, the DTS-HD 5.1 master audio track on this disc stands as the better half of the presentation. In the end, I’d recommend a purchase to the Trejo fans.
