WHAT WE THOUGHT
“Beast Machines” is another Transformers show that was after my time. The show was an attempt to cash in on the cult fan appeal of “Beast Wars”. But, this program was so grimdark and unforgiving that it scared off kids. Rhinox is a bad guy now and everybody acts like a thug from a lesser Chris Nolan movie. What is up with that, Hasbro?
I’ve got to give credit to Shout Factory for being so committed to getting every iteration of the show out on DVD. That being said, when a franchise lives long enough, fans get to see the bumps along the way. This is quite a forgettable show and not one that you hear being listed as a favorite among the fans. When discussing the show with readers, I kept hearing that it takes awhile to get used to watching. Well, I watched the entire series and I get why it ended so quickly. Little kids don’t want things to be serious. That’s for 13 year olds who cut themselves and listen to Emo music. Let Giant Robots be Giant Robots!
The DVD comes with interviews and commentaries as the special features. The standard definition transfer is crisp enough. The Dolby track is a supportive surround mix. It’s typical for most kid shows. In the end, I’d recommend a purchase to fans.
