Film Movement is set to honor one of Korea’s most talented auteurs, Lee Chang-dong, with a 4-film collector’s set featuring new 4K digital restorations. Known for his intricate narratives and profound exploration of human emotions, Lee has made an indelible mark on the world of cinema. This collection, set to be released in Summer 2024, includes Lee’s first three award-winning dramas – “Green Fish,” “Peppermint Candy,” and “Oasis,” along with his 2010 Cannes-feted film, “Poetry.”
“Green Fish” (1996) – A Journey into the Underworld
Lee’s directorial debut, “Green Fish,” tells the story of Makdong, a naïve young man returning to a rapidly modernizing Ilsan. Drawn into the criminal underworld, Makdong faces the harsh realities of violence and exploitation. The film, lauded for its strong narrative and powerful visuals, earned Best Film and Best New Director Awards from the Korean Film Critics Association and the Blue Dragon Awards.
“Peppermint Candy” (1999) – A Reflection of South Korea’s Turbulent History
In his second feature, “Peppermint Candy,” Lee presents a reverse-chronological narrative spanning 20 years in the life of Yongho, capturing the political unrest of late 20th century South Korea. This film won the Special Prize of the Jury at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival and was celebrated for its portrayal of marginalized individuals in Korean society.
“Oasis” (2002) – An Unlikely Love Story
“Oasis” is a poignant tale of an improbable relationship between Hong Jong-du, a man released from prison, and Han Gong-ju, a woman with cerebral palsy. This film won the Silver Lion for Best Director and Best Young Actress at the Venice Film Festival and was praised for its humanitarian message.
“Poetry” (2010) – A Grandmother’s Quest for Empathy
“Poetry,” winner of the Prize of the Ecumenical Jury – Special Mention and Best Screenplay at Cannes, explores the life of Mija, a grandmother grappling with Alzheimer’s and a family crime. This critically acclaimed film was recognized for its empathetic storytelling and profound humanism.

The Film Movement Classics Blu-ray set includes numerous extras, such as new interviews with the cast and crew, archival materials, and collector’s items like postcards and an illustrated booklet.
