Billings stars as Malibu, a seasoned drag performer whose historic gay bar faces closure from gentrification. When a shy young Egyptian named Tut wants to learn drag and come out, Malibu takes him under her wing as a drag mother. Through their bond, Tut gains courage while Malibu’s bar fights to stay alive.
With its timely themes and standout lead performance by trailblazer Billings, Queen Tut offers an entertaining yet meaningful story. As Cinephobia’s Ray Murray stated, the film is “an important counter to today’s trans/drag-phobia” while remaining an enjoyable drag tale.
After making the festival circuit this fall and winter, Queen Tut will release theatrically in 2024 followed by DVD and VOD. With Alexandra Billings’ brilliant acting and its inspirational message, Queen Tut promises to strike a chord with audiences through plenty of heart and humor.
At its core, the film represents an urgent call for acceptance and understanding. Through Malibu and Tut’s intergenerational friendship, Queen Tut shares a story that resonates deeply in today’s social climate.
