Let’s talk about Can’t Hardly Wait
Directed by Deborah Kaplan and Harry Elfont, the movie weaves together multiple storylines set against the backdrop of a wild graduation party. With its ensemble cast and relatable themes, it delves into the hopes, fears, and dreams of teenagers standing on the precipice of adulthood.
At the heart of the film is Preston Meyers, portrayed by Ethan Embry, a thoughtful and somewhat introverted student who has harbored a secret crush on the most popular girl in school, Amanda Beckett (Jennifer Love Hewitt), for four years. Preston believes that fate has given him a sign when Amanda breaks up with her longtime boyfriend, Mike Dexter (Peter Facinelli), on graduation day. Convinced that the graduation party is his last chance to confess his feelings, Preston embarks on a mission to deliver a heartfelt letter he has written to her.
Lauren Ambrose begins!
Meanwhile, Preston’s best friend, Denise Fleming (Lauren Ambrose), is a sarcastic and cynical student who feels out of place among her peers. She reluctantly accompanies Preston to the party, only to find herself locked in a bathroom with Kenny Fisher (Seth Green), a wannabe ladies’ man who has adopted hip-hop culture in an exaggerated and often cringeworthy manner. Their forced proximity leads them to confront their past friendship and the ways they’ve drifted apart, resulting in moments of genuine connection and self-realization.
Another subplot involves William Lichter (Charlie Korsmo), the class valedictorian and resident nerd who has been bullied by Mike Dexter throughout high school. William concocts an elaborate plan to humiliate Mike at the party by getting him drunk and photographing him in compromising situations. However, as the night progresses, William inadvertently becomes the life of the party, experiencing popularity for the first time and questioning his desire for revenge.
It’s a charming movie
Can’t Hardly Wait expertly balances humor with heartfelt moments, exploring themes of identity, acceptance, and the fear of the unknown that comes with graduating high school. Each character represents different facets of the teenage experience in a way unseen since American Graffiti.
The soundtrack plays a pivotal role in “Can’t Hardly Wait,” featuring a mix of popular songs from the ’90s that enhance the film’s atmosphere and emotional beats. Tracks like “Dammit” by Blink-182, “Can’t Get Enough of You Baby” by Smash Mouth, and “Paradise City” by Guns N’ Roses not only anchor the film in its time period but also resonate with the characters’ experiences.
It’s the most 1998 movie ever
Visually, the film captures the vibrant and chaotic energy of a teenage party. The cinematography utilizes dynamic camera movements and colorful lighting to reflect the excitement and unpredictability of the night. The directors skillfully interweave the various storylines, maintaining a cohesive narrative flow that keeps the audience engaged.
The dialogue is sharp and often humorous, capturing the vernacular of the time without feeling forced or outdated. The interactions between characters feel authentic, whether they’re engaging in awkward small talk, heartfelt confessions, or comedic misunderstandings.
“Can’t Hardly Wait” also addresses the theme of seizing the moment. Preston’s journey symbolizes the fear and anticipation that come with taking a leap of faith. His determination to express his feelings to Amanda, despite numerous setbacks, highlights the universal struggle of overcoming self-doubt.
The film doesn’t shy away from exploring the vulnerabilities of its characters. Moments of introspection allow the audience to empathize with their fears about the future. Whether it’s anxiety about leaving home, uncertainty about personal identity, or the pressure of societal expectations, the characters’ struggles are relatable and timeless.
It has never looked better
With the release of the 4K UHD version, “Can’t Hardly Wait” receives a visual and auditory enhancement that breathes new life into the film. The upgraded resolution provides sharper images, revealing details that may have been overlooked in previous formats. Colors are more vibrant, and the improved contrast enhances the overall visual appeal.
The audio upgrade immerses viewers in the party atmosphere, with clearer dialogue and a richer soundscape that amplifies the impact of the soundtrack. The enhancements contribute to a more engaging viewing experience, allowing both new audiences and long-time fans to appreciate the film in a fresh light.
“Can’t Hardly Wait” stands as a snapshot of late ’90s culture, but its themes remain relevant to contemporary audiences. The exploration of teenage angst, the complexities of friendships and relationships, and the journey toward self-discovery are universal experiences that continue to resonate.
I haven’t seen the movie in a decade and I forgot how much I liked it
In addition to its entertainment value, the film offers commentary on the social structures within high schools and the often arbitrary divisions between different groups. It suggests that these barriers can be overcome when individuals are willing to look beyond stereotypes and connect on a personal level.
The film’s humor is balanced with sincerity, avoiding the pitfalls of being overly sentimental or resorting to mean-spirited jokes. Instead, it finds a sweet spot that celebrates the awkwardness and excitement of youth.
“Can’t Hardly Wait” has earned its place as a beloved teen comedy, not just for its nostalgic appeal but for its honest and heartfelt portrayal of adolescence. The characters are flawed yet endearing, and their journeys offer insights into the challenges and triumphs of growing up.

Talking about the new 4K UHD release
Can’t Hardly Wait arrives on 4K UHD with all the special features ported over from the past SONY and SONY related releases. You get 10 Alternate and Deleted Scenes, archival deleted scenes, more featurettes, the reunion featurette and commentary. Most of this came from the late 00s Blu-ray release. But, it’s still cool.
Plus, the inclusion of the Smash Mouth music video feels a little sad now. That being said, it’s still my favorite song by the band.
