“Resistance” came out a few years ago in England. Naturally, most Americans have never seen it. The film is a look at D-Day failing and England preparing for Nazi stormtroopers to invade the country. Andrea Riseborough is our lead, but she keeps getting forced to share time with Michael Sheen and random guy from Game of Thrones. Riseborough kills it as a Welsh newlywed having to make due with her husband leaving her to join the Resistance. There are shades of better war scare movies here, but Riseborough gets the emotion of the material.
The fear and uncertainty of having your lifestyle end abruptly rarely gets tackled anymore. Occupation and survival are the thrust of this film, so don’t expect any brutal standoffs. While the film plays short, it doesn’t shy away from tackling the subtle darkness of war. I just wish there was a tighter focus on Riseborough’s struggle.
