THE PLOT THUS FAR
Based on Hasbro’s line of toy soldiers. “G. I. Joe is America’s top secret mobile strike force team. The mission: to defend freedom. The threat: Cobra, an evil organization bent on world conquest. The battle cry: Yo Joe!”
WHAT WE THOUGHT
DIC began the new series with a five part mini series called G.I.Joe: Operation Dragonfire. The theme song was the same except for using “A real American Hero”, they switched it to “International Hero.” More old characters were used in this 5 part mini series such as Low Light, Stalker, and Serpentor. They were very much different than the characters they used to be. The creators of the series decided to give Serpentor the axe in order to reintroduce Cobra Commander.
The show is pretty dated even for a cartoon. The animation is stiff and the loss of the Marvel Animation wing over at Sunbow shows in every frame. Too much emphasis is put on Sgt. Slaughter, while a ton of other characters get shoe-horned into the mix to produce more toys. The push to make them international heroes felt like a PC cop-in at the time. But, most of the original fanbase stopped caring and the new fans had more shows to capture their attention.
The DVD comes with a mono audio track. I found this weird since this was the era where you couldn’t escape Dolby 2.0 Surround on any animated show. However, the transfer looked way better than I remember its original broadcasts on FOX. Well, it aired on WDRB here, so I figured it aired on FOX for everyone. Oh well, it’s worth checking out for nostalgia’s sake.
