XXX: RETURN OF XANDER CAGE REVIEWED
“XXX: Return of Xander Cage” shouldn’t have been a surprise. While it’s been a bit since the franchised dominated screens, the kind of audience it attracts never went away. So, when it had the chance at easy pickings during January…why wouldn’t it blow up? The kids like Vin Diesel and the butch girls at Autozone love Ruby Rose. There is something for every market in this film.
But, that’s the problem with the movie. In an effort to appeal to as wide of an audience as possible, the end result doesn’t make sense. Donnie Yen is on his own tangent, so is Ruby Rose. Vin Diesel awkwardly slips back into the titular role, while being handheld by Toni Collette and Samuel L. Jackson. All the while, the audiences wonders when everything is going to make sense. But, they ride Motocross bikes on waves and junk.
Spectacle vs. satisfaction is something that all audiences need to meet head-on. Neither is evil, but both are needed to create a proper cinematic experience. I’m not even going to be one of those movie snobs that bemoans a film like this. Hell, the new Asian markets will guarantee a future sequel.
