“Powers” arrived with a first season that served as a fair adaptation of the classic Bendis/Oeming series. Debuting on the PS Network meant that I probably was never going to be bother watching it. I prefer XBL over PSN/PS+ every day of the week. But, I was interested in seeing what Sharlto Copley, Susan Heyward and Eddie Izzard brought to their roles. The end result was somewhere slightly under Daredevil, but above Agents of SHIELD.
The show tackles the issue of a world where all superheroes aren’t up for the Truth, Justice and the American Way route. Playing with public image ala Retro Girl’s costume issues, the issues of prosecuting criminality and the heroes’ desire to live normal lives are still interesting after all of these years. It’s just harder to make it stand out 15 years later after those first comics dropped. Still, I can’t wait to see where they take the material next year.
The Blu-Ray comes with a featurette about filming Powers. The outtakes, deleted scenes and FX featurette are all stunning Blu-Ray exclusives. The 1080p transfer is flawless and stands among one of the best TV on Blu releases this year. The same goes for the DTS-HD 5.1 master audio track. In the end, I’d recommend a purchase.
