THE PAUL NASCHY COLLECTION II REVIEWED
“The Paul Naschy Collection II” brings Spanish horror to new Gothic levels. The five films in this set plays with traditional European horror ideals. However, these Spanish tinged movies delight in savoring the gore. Everyone kinda deserves what they have coming, but Naschy finds this brutal angle to the action. What’s insane is that these movies took place over a 36 month period. As someone who studies horror, the tonal shifts are kinda crazy.
But, I guess that’s because I grew up in an era of slashers and bloody boob movies. The closest comparisons I can find are classic Universal and Hammer. They played with the traditional slate, but they also discovered new ways to really experiment with what was going on. While I can’t call any of these films personal favorites, I find what Naschy was trying to do to be insanely brilliant. Pick it up if you’re a fan.
