IT STAINS THE SANDS RED

IT STAINS THE SANDS RED REVIEWED

“It Stains The Sands Red” wants to be something like “Swiss Army Man”, but its roots are far campier. Hell, it feels like it could’ve been a section of an imaginary Heavy Metal movie. The zombie apocalypse is underway, so two lowlifes flee Las Vegas for the safety of an abandoned air hangar. Along the way, the woman drinks and snorts cocaine to excess. After a zombie kills her boyfriend, she’s left to flee into the desert. The problem is that she’s menstruating heavily and the zombie is following her period blood trail.

This is where about 25% of the audience checks out and they can piss off. The Vicious Brothers have discovered something delightfully awful here and I like the approach. If we accept the zombie at its primal nature, then who cares that period blood stains the sands red? Desert or not, this zombie wants to eat! Plus, I enjoy watching an impaired woman stomp all over genre constraints, as she fights to survive.

I love that this is the movie that spits in the face of the Whedon genre heroine. While our lead tries to form a relationship with Smalls the Zombie, nothing transformative is going to take place. This is a story about staying one step away. A story about surviving a hunt. Think of it like First Blood, but with a chick ragging and a zombie wanting to eat her.
