HOW TO BE A LATIN LOVER REVIEWED
“How To Be A Latin Lover” is supposed to be a crossover vehicle for international star Eugenio Derbez. While Derbez has proved himself funny in films like Instructions Not Included, does he have what it takes to win over America? The answer is, well maybe Middle America. This is the safe kind of family film that adds a slight sleaze to it to make it edgy. Basically, if you can handle the fact that the character is a gigolo, everything else works for the film. Plus, Raquel Welch is still looking decent.
Honestly, this could be quite a lesser movie without Ken Marino’s clever comedic direction. Marino packs the film with comedic friends to help keep the plot moving, but ultimately this is Derbez’s movie to captain. I buy him as an aging gigolo trying to figure out that family matters most to him. Other than that, it’s a light comedy that plays friendlier than its PG-13 rating would have you believe. It’s not going to be ideal for the 5 year olds and the great grandparents. But, your 10 year old can handle this movie.
