THE GONG SHOW MOVIE REVIEWED
“The Gong Show Movie” is one of those Universal deep cuts that I never thought I’d see get a Blu-Ray release. For those that haven’t seen it, the film plays like Roger Corman trying to make a Fellini film. Gong Show creator Chuck Barris is getting sick of the show and the weirdos that populate his life. Taking a look at the earliest days of reality TV, we find said game show host wanting to flee from the public eye. The problem is that Jamie Farr and Rip Taylor keep stalking him around the world.
Whether it’s Jaye P. Morgan flashing her tits or the Gong Show regulars giving him grief, Barris knows how to pay fan service. Unfortunately, the film is nearly impenetrable for non-fans. Enough time has passed since the film arrived that newer fans can get a different degree of appreciation. I just appreciate the film for being a time capsule of one of my Top 10 favorite TV shows. That being said, I wish we could’ve got Chuck Barris on the commentary or something. Not a big fan of the noted expert talking over the film.
