ON AIR – LIVE AT THE BBC VOLUME 2 (THE BEATLES)

BEATLESBBCV2box

REVIEW:

I heard the first On Air album around the same time I was listening to Anthology. Man, I really got into the Beatles for a bit there. I had grown up with their music my entire life, but I was a huge Carpenters fan before that point. This set has music, but we also get a lot of comedy and interview material. I’m a weird fan of this stuff, as I love having a popular history of things. However, I want to hear rock jams and not Ringo calling people college pudding.

But, that’s just me. Each Beatle fan is unique in their sensibilities. While I only got to drown in five songs on repeat from the album, I can say that what I heard convinced me of the superiority of this set. Priced under 20 bucks, it would be a welcome addition to any fan’s Christmas stocking. Do people still do stockings? I thought you gave up on that stuff when your age hit double digits.

The sources vary for the recordings, so don’t expect stellar quality throughout the presentation. However, the Beeb did an amazing job at saving so much of this material. You can almost feel Brian Epstein in the background wringing his hands, as he forces a certain image for the Liverpool Gang of Four. But, let’s stop with the historical speculation and enjoy the music.

ANCHORMAN: THE RICH MAHOGANY EDITION

THE PLOT THUS FAR

Will Ferrel (Old School, Elf) is Ron Burgundy, a top-rated 1970’s San Diego anchorman who believes women have a place in the newsroom – as long as they stick to covering fashion shows or late-breaking cooking stories. So when ron is told he’ll be working with a bright young newswoman (Christina Applegate) who’s beautiful, ambitious and smart enough to be more than eye candy, it’s not just a clash of two TV people with really great hair – it’s war! Filled with wicked wit and slapstick humor, Anchorman is the year’s most wildly irreverent, must-see comedy hit!  Free Movie Coupon Sticker on each title (up to $7.50 value)!

WHAT WE THOUGHT

Will Ferrell is TV news anchor Ron Burgundy in 1970s San Diego. This is pre female anchor era, a dark age when men reported the news almost exclusively. Burgundy, shallow and self-absorbed without redemption, chases skirts and is so genuinely stupid he reads anything on the teleprompter. His news crew consists of adulators and one misfit, Brick Tamland, played with unremitting mental blankness by Steve Carrell. Burgundy’s dog is a delight, a pooch who can bark in a few languages.

The “Men’s Club” is jolted by the station honcho’s decision to add a woman to the newsroom, largely to appease the network satraps. He says it’s necessary in the interests of “diversity,” a word one staff member doesn’t even understand. Enter pretty but tough Veronica Corningstone, Christina Applegate. Applegate makes what really is a tough comedic role work completely.Upon waking up, he tries to steal a quick five minutes on his brother’s guitar, a musical instrument requiring grace and precision, and he does so very badly before he is forced off it: dismissing those whom go on to strike up a good sound as a four-man-band. This drama cannot be divorced from its social and political context. The seeming hopelessness and helplessness of remote aboriginal communities like this one screams out for not just understanding but some way forward.

The film’s not without its flaws, certainly. Chief among them is the wasting of one of the best comic character actors in the biz: Fred Willard. If ever there was someone born to play a smarmy local TV newsman, Willard is it. But he’s inexplicably cast here as a dull station suit, while David Koechner plods through the sportscaster role that was clearly meant for him–passable but certainly not as inspired as Willard would have been. Also, I think that the story would have benefited if Vaughn and his cronies, the closest thing to villains in this lightheaded romp, had a little more face time.

The Blu-Ray comes with featurettes, music video, alternate cut, auditions, a little booklet and Movie Cash for Anchorman 2. For all intents and purposes, this is nothing but the same edition that was a Best Buy exclusive for years. If you bought that one, then there’s no need to buy this one. The A/V Quality is a sharp DTS-HD 5.1 master audio track alongside a clean 1080p transfer. I spot minor bits of noise during some of the newsroom scenes, but it works. In the end, I’d recommend a purchase.

THE SPIDER PROJECT: CHAPTER 5 – HOW DR. CONNORS GOT HIS ARM BACK

THELIZARDheader

Preface:

Most of this material was originally written in the Summer of 2012. Due to matters outside of my control and various maneuvers, these segments had to be completely re-edited and recut to meet certain legal guidelines. Now, you finally get to see them.

CHAPTER 5:

How Dr. Connors Got His Arm Back

THELIZARDheadshot

“The Amazing Spider-Man”  is set for release this July and a new generation of Spidey fans are going to be introduce to the Lizard. But, before we can get too excited over the monster, we have to understand the man. Dr. Curt Connors is a GI medic who had to have his arm amputated after a bombing blast. Feeling like he needed to use his scientific know-how to reclaim his lost limb, Connors teamed up with his buddy Dr. Ted Sallis (Man-Thing) to create a regenerative formula. The formula worked, however the use of reptilian DNA made Connors turn into the green monster that we all know.

Spider-Man first encountered Connors/Lizard after he was challenged to investigate the wild claims being made about the creature near Coral Gables, Florida. For the first handful of appearances, The Lizard and Spidey fought and Connors was cured. Eventually, Connors relocated to NYC because that is the hub of all reality in the Marvel Universe. The Lizard continued to fight Spider-Man and the original X-Men, while Connors saved Aunt May and did some pretty noble stuff. It was an interesting parallel, but there was something bubbling under the surface.

LIZARDSPIDEY

Dr. Curt Connors has been a dual figure for Peter Parker. Much in the way that Norman Osborn and Dr. Otto Octavius functioned. All three characters were masters of science and achieved the things that young Parker wanted for himself. More importantly, Connors was a family man who craved the structure that Peter lost when Uncle Ben died. Needless to say, Peter naturally gravitated to the Doctor as a fatherly mentor figure for the next few decades. Peter would spent most of the 70s and early 80s serving as Connors’ lab assistant alongside such notables as Debra Whitman.

But, something happened around the time of the first Secret Wars. Years were spent with villains using Connors’ son Billy as a means to lure the Lizard out and eventually it led to the dissolution of Connors’ family. Peter watched as his mentor began to break and we saw the Lizard transformations shift into something far more savage. The Connors personality would spent the next 20 years become more permeable, as Connors started to slip into the background.

First his wife died from cancer due to exposure to hazardous chemicals. Later, Connors lost custody of his son after experimenting on him. Then, Connors finally snapped and killed Calypso (Haitian devotee of Kraven the Hunter) after she had been trying to take over his mind for years. Connors was becoming more and more savage, until he finally let go. Unfortunately, this meant giving his Lizard the mental ability and desire to eat his son & the kid’s new foster family.

LIZARDCONNORSFAMILY

The Connors family has never been stable post Connors’ powers. But, he got his arm back while being a monster. I’m not sure if Stan Lee and Steve Ditko were trying to make sense of this neogenic bargain, but there we go. Paul Jenkins and later writers have tried to make the argument that Connors was always in control while being The Lizard. I don’t buy that, as it puts Connors in a negative light for the duration of his creation. I do buy his attempts to go straight and try to bring his family back together. However, he was a victim of the dark and gritty comics at the time.

So many people forget that when Todd McFarlane was blowing up the charts, The Lizard was the main villain of the Spider-Man arc that he used to make his nut. The drooling, sharp teeth and desire to crouch and linger all became McFarlane trademarks. In that sense, The Lizard became the monster he was always destined to become. Frankenstein’s Monster wasn’t evil, but he had the power to lash out when he finally gave into his bestial nature. Much the same can be said for Connors.

LIZARDfinal

What ultimately matters about The Lizard is that he’s one of many cautionary tales for Spider-Man. Unlike other heroes, Spidey is always walking that line between goofy webslinger and six-armed monstrosity that is trying to hide from sunlight. Connors shared the same interests and goals as Spider-Man, but we can’t ever pin down what went wrong. We know nothing of Connors’ life prior to his arm losing accident. Plus, we can’t say that if Spider-Man would’ve mutated into a giant spider…would he not have done the same things? No one can really pin down on how they will respond in a given situation until they’re in it.

The closest that Spider-Man came was having six arms for a few issues, but Dr. Connors helped him out of that with the aid of Morbius’s venom. Those are some rather bizarre monster movies parallels. Unfortunately, we’re not going to have the time to really touch upon Morbius. Let me put it this way. Science based Greek Vampire who really doesn’t want to drink human blood. The guy can’t keep a series afloat for more than a year. Blah, blah, back to The Lizard.

Mentor, father, walking bag of scales; the guy is interesting if you discount Rhys Ifans’ performance in the 2012 movie. However, he misses out on a key factor that we’re going to bring up in future chapters. Stay tuned, as we try to finally put this project to bed.

MY LITTLE PONY – FRIENDSHIP IS MAGIC: A PONY FOR EVERY SEASON

THE PLOT THUS FAR

There’s a Pony for every season and an episode for every Pony in this fantastic collection of My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic. That’s right! Each member of the Mane 6 (Twilight Sparkle, Rarity, Fluttershy, Rainbow Dash, Apple Jack and Pinkie Pie) gets her very own opportunity to shine with six episodes guaranteed to have you laughing and singing as you discover the magic of friendship!

WHAT WE THOUGHT

“A Pony for Every Season” is the latest release from the Friendship is Magic sect of My Little Pony. Over six episodes, you’ll slowly ask yourself why Bronies are a thing. Most of the episodes are solo spotlights, but we get Pony interaction. That must be a thing for children and adult males. Honestly, it’s a charming show, but the premise is wearing thin. When do we get that television movie where their leader dies and Derpy Pony becomes their new Judeo Christian paternal figure of choice?

The DVD comes with a sing-along as the only special feature. The A/V Quality is strong with a supportive transfer and a Dolby audio track. The Dolby track doesn’t get much back channel action outside of the few major action scenes. In the end, I’d recommend a purchase to parents of young kids.

LAW & ORDER: CRIMINAL INTENT – THE FINAL YEAR

LAWORDERFINALYEAR

THE PLOT THUS FAR

Vincent D’Onofrio and Kathryn Erbe are back as Detectives Goren and Eames for the final riveting season of Law & Order: Criminal Intent.

Year Ten marks the return of the franchise’s heart and soul. After a lengthy departure from duty, Goren returns to the Major Case Squad attached to a sentence of mandated therapy by the department. Nevertheless, Goren and Eames are as effective as ever in exposing some of New York’s most high-profile and diabolical criminals. When the stakes are highest, the Major Case Squad gets the call. These are their stories.

WHAT WE THOUGHT

Vincent D’Onofrio was so good on this show. However, most Law and Order material hits a point of saturation. How many times can we watch cop and legal shows? There’s recycling material and then just lazily grabbing any story out of the paper and trying to splice it together. But, this show always succeeded on the strength of its actors. The powers that be should be glad that they were able to get a decade out of a second tier spin-off.

The DVD comes with no special features. The A/V Quality is strong with a supportive transfer and a Dolby audio track. The Dolby track doesn’t get much back channel action outside of the few major action scenes. In the end, I’d recommend a purchase to fans.

MERRY CHRISTMAS SPLAT & MORE WINTER STORIES

 SPLATCHRISTMAS
THE PLOT THUS FAR

Four all new Christmas and winter tales come to DVD! Stories include Merry Christmas, Splat (Splat tries to be a good kitty in order to receive presents on Christmas morning), Fletcher and the Snowflake Christmas, Snowflake Bentley and Owl Moon.

WHAT WE THOUGHT

“Merry Christmas Splat” is a wonderfully narrated series of 4 stories with the Scholastic charm. Basically, we get some quality Christmas tales and some cat action. These releases tend to stick to a few relatable themes to make them easier for kids to process. This is something for the 8 and under crowd. Honestly, these stories might be strictly for 5 and younger. But, that’s perfectly fine. We need more material for that age range around the Holidays.

The DVD comes with a read along and a look at the Fletcher animation creation as the special features. The A/V Quality is strong with a supportive transfer and a Dolby audio track. The Dolby track doesn’t get much back channel action outside of the few major kitty action scenes. In the end, I’d recommend a purchase to parents of young kids.
