Ben 10 Versus The Universe is the latest movie from the Ben 10 universe. While I was never ever in the target audience for this stuff, I love seeing its ability to be retained by a fanbase. I know Doctoral candidates in their 20s and 6 year olds who equally dug on this show. Plus, it was made by some of my favorite Marvel creators in the 1990s. There’s something for everyone.
Man of Action has made a great kid Sci-Fi action show. But, the plots are pleasantly thin. In Ben 10 Versus the Universe, Ben Tennyson ends up being mistaken for the villain Vilgax. Meanwhile, a meteor landed on Earth containing the real Vilgax. Will the imposter be exposed in time? These are serious high stakes for young kids.
There are many fundamentals of Silver Age comics on display here. Coming out of the Marvel tradition, we have a young hero having an identity crisis about his abilities. Is Ben good enough to keep being a superhero? Before he takes a ton of time to really think about it, he’s been pulled into a direct conflict. It’s pretty fun.
The DVD comes with no special features. The A/V Quality is typical for a recent Cartoon Network release. It looks good for standard definition, but as always I’d prefer to see an HD equivalent. If you have kids that dig the series, then this is a must buy.
