SAVING PRIVATE RYAN REVIEWED
“Saving Private Ryan” is probably the best looking 4K disc on the market. Let’s just get that out of the way. Janusz Kaminski’s Oscar winning cinematography often looked murky on DVD and Blu-ray. Now, it shines in a way that I haven’t seen outside of theatrical exhibition. Presented in Native 4K with a nice Dolby Vision encode, Paramount has hit something amazing with their emerging 4K line. They’ve turned an older film into reference material. Yeah, it’s from the 90s, but that’s pretty big for 4K.
Combine that with the bombastic Atmos track for probably the best classic presentation in a 4K home theater. The Omaha Beach landing will make an imprint in all channels. The curse of the home theater enthusiast is the constant pursuit of recreating the theatrical exhibition. Yet, this wraps you in the loving embrace of World War II carnage in a way that doesn’t overwhelm. Sure, it’s going to give your dog PTSD, but he/she can be taken to canine support groups. You now have sticky bomb tank attacks in the highest resolution possible now.
Like many past Paramount releases, the special features are ported over from the last Blu-ray. That’s not a deal breaker for me. I would match rather see studios try to max out the 4K discs to create Native 4K presentations in the home. I have Braveheart and Gladiator on deck next. If this is what I can expect going forward, then I’m completely onboard.
