THE MIRACLE SEASON REVIEWED
“The Miracle Season” wants you to believe that Jesus is ready to spike that ball when you miss the serve. Taking source material from the death of High School volleyball prospect Caroline Found, this is a tale about how High School Christian athletes can beat anything. Hell, the poor dead girl’s mother spends her last days trying to fight the mortal coil shuffle since she’s so inspired. Thankfully, that stops for half of the movie as we get into some ripped volleyball action!
I’m not familiar with the director, but he shoots sports action rather well. It works even better when you don’t have Helen Hunt yelling at the girls like a gender swapped Burgess Meredith. Real-life footage of the team gets spliced into the movie to help sell the drama, but it reveals a short-coming. Outside of the central drama push for the team, there’s not a ton of story material. Hell, it probably would’ve made a better hour long drama for TV. But, what can you do?
This is the high season for any spiritually situated cinema, so the push was on to get it done. While it’s not the worst religious movie I’ve seen this year, it feels overlong and missing the point. Still, the sports action was quite amazing.
