THE SECT REVIEWED
“The Sect” is about why you should never offer room and board to strangers. Plus, it has magic bunnies and killer rabbits. Giovanni Lombardo Radice hangs the two sections of the film together and I know this sounds like a headache. Well, that’s because it’s three films in one and nobody really had a handle on the story. What beings with a killer Manson-like hippie cult eventually leads to dark spirits targeting Jamie Lee Curtis’ sister in Germany.
The rest of the film is spent trying to turn the death spirits of the hippies to the modern action. There’s a splash of Rosemary’s Baby in the mix, but this is virtually a straight resurrection tale. While some hardcore Soavi fans will say the movie is straightforward…I don’t buy it. Hell, Herbert Lom seems like he’s working off the first draft of the script. Plus, what’s up with all of the Celtic imagery in an Italian horror film? This one is a mess, but it’s interesting to see where it lands in Soavi’s work. Check it out.
