THE DEVOUT REVIEWED
“The Devout” follows a dying little girl who is believed to be the reincarnation of Gus Grissom. While that is delightfully weird, the rest of the film fails to leave up to that promise. The film does try to use the idea of reincarnation as a cheat to get around Judeo-Christian hang-ups. But, it’s also a way for dying kids to live forever. Nobody has to ever lose their kid, you just wait for your precious little Angel to return as the next kid.
The amount of mental gymnastics required to make this concept work is stunning. But, the film plays as a less aggressive Christian film take on the matter. I attribute that to the film being a Canadian production. If it were shot in America, you’d have Melissa Joan Hart starring in it and screaming at the audience. So, there’s that.
