A GHOST STORY REVIEWED
“A Ghost Story” should’ve floored me. The first viewing wowed me with its tales of ghosts and pie. But, then I started wondering what connected for me. I’m a big fan of the directing talent and the previous work achieved with the stars on “Ain’t Them Bodies Saints”. However, the more I view this film…the further detached I become. What’s happening to me?
The idea of using ghosts as a way to understand grief and relationships ending is amazing. But, the film makes its 92 minutes drag when it obsesses over minutia. Casey Affleck is a pretty sheepish actor, so not letting him engage anything just pushes the audience to sleep. What Rooney Mara brings is amazing, but even she falls victim to things that feel like Terence Malick’s B-reel. There is an amazing movie buried in the overgrowth here. I just wish it all came together.
