HERO, THE

THE HERO REVIEWED

“The Hero” feels like so many other films I saw before. Whether it’s pro wrestling and Mickey Rourke or Hugh Jackman limping to the end of his Wolverine run, this is starting to become a trend. When did cinema become the domain of old white men making their last stands? I guess you can trace it back to “The Wild Bunch” and the start of the apocalyptic Western. So many film fans are obsessed with watching fading facades of archetypes collapse under the weight of age or disease.

So, what does The Ram, Old Man Logan and Sam Elliott have in common? They’re an archetype that keeps repeating. Older men finding purpose near the end of their lives via a woman, a new career or a renewed sense of purpose. It’s weird that so many films about old white guys trying to cement their legacy hit now. What is it about the current climate that makes these movies so appealing? I wonder, I really wonder.

Just kidding. We all know that the dying gasps of masculinity are a response to a post-modern male culture trying to redefine itself in a connected age. If that doesn’t work, you can just say people are woke now. ‘Woke’ is still a thing…right?
