BIG SICK, THE

THE BIG SICK REVIEWED

“The Big Sick” is a couple’s attempt to restage the magic that happened when they first met. Well, it also involved falling in love of a medically induced coma. You guys saw the inane trailers with ‘Wild Honey’ playing through the background. Plus, they used man on the street interviews to pad the TV Spots. Disney on Ice pulls that crap, not quality movies. But, the movie worked. I put a lot of that squarely on the shoulders of director Michael Showalter.

For a film that runs slightly overlong at 2 hours, it manages to show three different worlds at break-neck speed. Kumail’s world, Emily’s world and finally the world of being critically sick. When the three are forced to intertwine, the audience gets to see politeness give way to forced confrontation. Having not being a follower of the podcast that helped spawn this script, I wonder about its romantic origins.

Everything I saw showed two insular and kinda snotty people fighting each other until eventually one gave up. I guess that’s what appeals to SJW types looking to have their Annie Hall moment. Anyways, the supporting cast saves the film.
