SGT. PEPPER’S LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND

SGT. PEPPER’S LONELY HEARTS CLUB REVIEWED

“Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” has one thing going forward it. That is when it arrived in theaters. It was a time when even the biggest bomb could find a way to eventually make money. Whether it was due to a hit soundtrack or the fact that 1970s cave people only had cocaine and three networks to entertain themselves remains up in the air. But, I appreciate how a cover band movie could end up being a major tentpole for a studio. I always wondered why cool acts didn’t get smacked down by fans for being in this one.

I buy Steve Martin doing a goofy rendition of Maxwell’s Silver Hammer, but Aerosmith and Alice Cooper were too cool to do this. Urban legend suggests the Bee Gees’ involvement was due to their little brother Andy being held hostage by Robert Stigwood at the top of Universal’s Black Tower. The fight to win back their brother from the Grease producer would later be turned into the Sam Strange produced epic “Showdown at Vivendi Falls”. What I’m saying is that a bunch of Beatles covers with miscast actors and the tinge of cocaine in the air doesn’t make for a good movie.
