THE WEDDING BANQUET REVIEWED

“The Wedding Banquet” showcased Ang Lee’s early sensibilities for LGBTQ cinema. Mitchell Lichtenstein and Winston Chao play a gay couple living in NYC whose lives are interrupted when Chao’s parents want him to get married. What follows is a sad sitcom pushed for an arranged marriage, while the two men can’t get together. The film plays rather short and lends itself to old school approaches to gay drama. But, it’s important to remember its place in history.

It was an early movie about gay coupling, plus it pulled down an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Language Film. Could it have aged better? Sure. However, I’ll appreciate the effort more than anything.
