SERIAL MOM REVIEWED
“Serial Mom” has aged well. That being said, I consider it the lesser of the Waters Big Studio movies. Sure, the Waters’ love of the courtroom and gore is there. It’s just that it feels like anyone could’ve made this movie. “Hairspray” was a personal statement about loving music and his hometown. “Cry Baby” was the perfect kind of exploitation movie with so much homosexual undertones. Hell, even “A Dirty Shame” was doing its best to bring the filth of the 1970s into the 00s. What was left?
While watching this film, I could see something that I missed as a 13 year old first-time viewer. This was the Watershed moment for Waters. A point at which he could’ve merged his vision into a mainstream breach. Unfortunately, the production backers and studios cooled as the late 90s started to drag on. Time has been kind to “Serial Mom”, as it has found a place as one of the few amazing horror comedies. If that wasn’t enough, it appears to have a big drag following. Google it and be amazed.
