“Sully” has really irritated some younger viewers. I guess that seeing a legendary director age into meh is a new thing for them. Eastwood has always been a passable director. The guy prefer single takes and letting his actors feel their way through scenes. So, why did the film play to IMAX screens and big promotions for that crash sequence?
Well, because that’s the nature of the industry anymore. The quiet story of survivor’s guilt and human ability gets pushed to the back. There’s something about the film that feels like striking after the iron has got cold. I hate to see the mid to late 1990s Eastwood returning. This mode feels like lazy direction that’s meant to appeal to an audience base that’s shrinking due to a combination of natural causes and cold snaps.
Tom Hanks works wonders in the role of Sully. The same goes for Aaron Eckhart and Laura Linney. However, does strong turns in weak movies matter? I mean, “Invictus” snuck its way into some Oscar nominations. That movie might as well been tap water.
