A BIGGER SPLASH REVIEWED
“A Bigger Splash” is a film about sexual awakening done with the navel gazing of modern European tinged dramas. The four leads are amazing and everyone gets to show their healthy amount of flesh. Still, this is Fiennes and Swinton’s showcase. Swinton is dealing with throat issues following a recent medical issue. Will she forsake her new lover to reunite with Fiennes? Will anyone under the age of 50 care?
Swinton reunites with her I Am Love director and the results are stunning…for her. While she gets to evoke Bowie at times, the same love isn’t shown to anyone else in the cast. While the rest of the cast tries to capture that extra bit of attention, the audience is never given a reason to follow them. The third act is such a bizarre tonal shift that makes me scratch my head. Having seen it in theaters, I can almost pinpoint to the second when most of the audience walked out. But, I want to give the film another chance. After two viewings on home video, I feel that such good graces in vein. Stream or rent if you’re curious. Purchase only if you’re a Swinton mega fan.
