BEING CHARLIE REVIEWED
“Being Charlie” is the most sanded down depiction of addiction that I’ve seen. While father and son Reiners tried to take the personal and make it into a movie, the duo was too close to the material. They cut corners and took what should’ve been real and made it into an edgy basic cable movie. Supporting turns from actors like Common attempt to bring an edge to the story. But, how many times do we need to see this? Friends, pretty girls and families can’t save addicts. Only the addict can save the addict.
It was nice seeing Cary Elwes turn in a strong lead role. But, he’s just a fly in the ointment. I’m holding out hope for Reiner’s LBJ movie, but I just don’t know. I think when Garry Marshall died, Reiner just absorbed his blandness all Highlander style. They were the Princes of the Universe.
