SUPERGIRL: THE COMPLETE FIRST SEASON

SUPERGIRL REVIEWED

“Supergirl” is the first of the DC shows that I’m truly adoring. “Arrow” and “The Flash” both have their moments, but there are also long stretches that make it quite painful to watch on a weekly basis. But, it’s not like I stick to appointment TV anymore. While revisiting this series in a complete 20 episode season run, I saw something. Something that I didn’t see when I was wincing at the initial pilot leak almost 18 months ago. I was seeing a perfectly realize Supergirl.

A ton of credit belongs Benoist who portrays a Kara/Supergirl that is nothing less than perfection. Nailing the origins and the sweet nature of the character, you have to enjoy a female lead like this. Superman was always portrayed at odds of balancing his Smallville/Metropolis/Kryptonian sides. Supergirl only has one side. She’s a fun-loving young woman who just wants to do the right thing. When we get the team-up episode where she meets the dimension hopping Barry Allen, the show gets that. There’s no competition or misunderstandings. They are two young friends that are floored by showing off their powers.

The Fort Rozz via the Phantom Zone allows for some Freak of the Week material, but this show plays it far better than the garbage that was “Smallville”. While we have a mix of deep cut and B-list villains, Supergirl is allowed to explore the deeper aspects of her villains and her cousin’s rogues gallery. Having the sense to use Superman’s lesser supporting cast and Martian Manhunter to support Supergirl is genius. I hope that the show creators bring back Jemm, as it would allow for a bit of intergalactic world building.

But, that’s where we are with a great first season. What’s in the pod at the end? How will the DEO bounce back from J’Onn J’Onzz being outed? Did Facinelli ever get a grasp on Max Lord? This is just like older DC comics where the end of the year would have a final page showing four panels of upcoming stories. You don’t know when you’re getting there, but the promise of greatness remains. Great work all around and I’d recommend a purchase.
