MOTHER’S DAY

MOTHER’S DAY REVIEWED

“Mother’s Day” is a timewaster of a movie. Capping Marshall’s recent string of Holiday themed movies, there’s utterly no reason for it to exist. What difference exists in a story of three different circles of people coming together on a Holiday. Some would argue that it’s no different than the domestic comedy dramas of the 1970s. Well, they had a point. They were acting showcases. This film plays like a sitcom episode that just won’t end.

This is the kind of movie that puts serious discussion in a weird place. While it’s not a great movie, it’s technically well crafted. It’s a buddy production where so many people come together because friends of friends creating it. While Soderbergh can turn these party films into enjoyable audience experience, Marshall still has his head planted firmly in the 1970s TV production phase. That being said, I can name a half dozen people that watched this film in theaters and will help it turn a profit on home video.

Ever fragmenting film audiences are an odd duck like that. While there is no artistic merit to the film, some moviegoers just like to watch people have fun onscreen. I guess these are the same kind of people that read “Us” and “People” a little too closely.
