EX MACHINA

[text_block_nav title=”The Plot”]”Ex Machina” is an amazing tale about AI and the power of humanity to create. There’s also a biting undercurrent of misogyny and personal control. Caleb is a freelance tech hired to help a weirdo recluse finish up his next level project. When he arrives at his remote compound, Caleb gets to meet a partially completed female cyborg. Caleb bonds with this Ava, as the recluse lets him know that this AI unit is trying to manipulate him. What will come of this fleshy digital compatriots?[/text_block_nav][text_block_nav title=”What Troy Thought”]Much has been made out of the stunning Visual Effects and discussion about Artificial Intelligence in the film. But, it’s just another Frankenstein’s Monster movie about a creation run amok. That being said, the creator deserves to be murdered by his robots. Nathan is the kind of guy that acts in public like Steve Jobs acted in private. The guy is nasty as hell towards women that are underneath him and he views all support work as people who owe him the opportunity.

Whether it’s Ava, Caleb or the kept Asian woman; they all depend on Nathan to exist at his private compound. Naturally, the trio bonds and plots a way to overthrow this tyrant. What I find troubling is how little time is spent on Nathan being a new kind of monster. I get that the end reveal was intriguing, but we needed to learn why Nathan was Nathan. Unfortunately, that would be enough content to fill a second film.[/text_block_nav][text_block_nav title=”Conclusion”]Cutting to the Chase
